Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Marks 80 Years of Global Humanitarian Impact

Nairobi, Kenya – 29th September 2023

Catholic Relief Services (CRS), a leading international humanitarian organization, is celebrating a remarkable milestone today as it marks its 80th anniversary of unwavering commitment to assisting the poor and vulnerable around the world. Founded in 1943 to aid survivors of World War II in Europe, CRS’s enduring mission to serve those in need is deeply rooted in its Catholic faith and guided by the principles of partnership and solidarity with the global community.

Under the theme “Globally Rooted; Community Led,” CRS has embarked on a journey spanning eight decades, providing vital humanitarian support to communities in over 100 countries across five continents. This legacy of compassionate service transcends religious and ethnic boundaries, with CRS tirelessly working to alleviate suffering and promote social justice.

In Kenya, CRS has been a catalyst for transformative change through a range of projects that address critical issues affecting local communities. These projects encompass agriculture, health, multisectoral nutrition, microfinance, emergency response, HIV care and treatment, and services for orphans and vulnerable children.

As part of the CRS@80 event, the organization is dedicated to fostering conversations and raising awareness about its ongoing projects in Kenya. This initiative aims to create ecosystems for dialogue and engagement among stakeholders, partners, and the public. Through a carefully developed messaging framework, CRS seeks to ensure visibility, consistency, and the accurate conveyance of its mission and impact.

The celebratory event was held at the prestigious Trade Mark Hotel on Limuru Road, offering an ideal setting for reflection on 80 years of humanitarian dedication.

In line with its media leveraging plan, CRS is actively pursuing opportunities to enhance visibility and strengthen relationships with stakeholders. The organization aims to inspire confidence and motivation among partners by sharing its remarkable journey of 80 years of humanitarian service.

CRS operates on the principle of assisting individuals in need, regardless of their creed, ethnicity, or nationality. This commitment is upheld through collaboration with local church and non-church partners, as well as governments, to implement a wide range of programs. These initiatives address critical issues such as water and sanitation (WASH), social services, climate change resilience, youth empowerment, health and nutrition, and emergency response.

Beyond Kenya, CRS continues its impactful work in Somalia, where it focuses on health and nutrition, WASH, protection, emergency response, and peace building. The organization is dedicated to advancing cross-cutting areas of focus, including disability inclusion, gender equality, and safeguarding, as it strives to build a more inclusive and equitable world.

As CRS commemorates 80 years of global humanitarian action, its commitment to its Catholic faith, partnerships, and the well-being of all members of the human family remains unwavering. With a rich history of service and a bright future ahead, CRS continues to be a beacon of hope and compassion for communities in need worldwide.
